Google Analytics

If you could only have one tool to help you do SEO, it would be this one. Without Google Analytics you are flying completely blind. This is the only way you can know how your website is performing. Finding out how your website is performing is crucial to SEO – you have to know how much traffic your website is getting and where it is coming from, and also how people move through your site once they get there. Setting up google analytics is as simple as placing a piece of code into the header section of your site, which lets google know you are the real owner. From there, you have access to the data that will let you monitor your performance and assess whether the changes that you are making are working.


Google Search Console

Google Search Console, formerly known as Webmaster Tools, is sort of like having access to the back end of Google. You can block pages from being indexed, request re-indexing of existing pages, find crawl errors, upload sitemaps and URL parameters to help google understand your site structure, as well as generating a mark-up schema.

Essentially all of the tools within the search console application allow you to help Google search engine understand your site better and serve it up in the results pages more appropriately.



SEMrush is a subscription SEO service. An industry favourite, SEMrush lets you track your rankings for various keywords over time, conduct keyword research, audit your site for errors and offer SEO suggestions. It also allows the user to conduct competitor site analysis so they can benefit from their strengths, create bespoke branded reports with a few clicks, assess backlink profiles and make backlink suggestions.

In short SEMrush is a one stop SEO workshop, but it comes at a price. If you devote just some of your marketing budget to a SEMrush subscription you won’t regret it.



Moz has some of the same functionality as SEMrush, keyword tracking and site audits, but its main advantage is as a community and knowledge hub. Rand Fishkin, the founder of Moz, has managed to build more than an SEO platform – he’s built a movement of DIY SEO practitioners, all sharing their findings and techniques on the Moz Blog. Rand’s ‘White-board Friday’ instructional videos are an industry favourite, and many of the best of the business still swear by them, week in and week out!



FatJoe is a paid service that provides the two most crucial factors of SEO, back-links and content. Of course, both of these can be gotten organically, and work on getting both of these organically should never stop, but if you have the budget buying a boost is always worth it too.

A few high-quality backlinks with decent anchor text, and some SEO-quality on-site content could boost your rankings and spell the difference between you and your competitors.


Keyword Planner

While the Google Keyword planner is officially a PPC tool, keyword research also forms a core component of SEO. After all, how can you optimise a site without knowing which keywords and potential search terms you are optimising for?

Keyword planner can give suggestions of semantically related keywords and give estimated search volume, this is crucial when building up a picture of how searchers behave, and can allow you to focus on search terms with higher traffic to really capitalise on these searches.
